"Strangers take position in my street.” he says, “they look unprepared, without any kind of war experience". Young men in t-shirts, resembling students more than fighters, drag sandbags into a blockade below Touma's window. A rebel appeals by loudspeaker to a regime soldier, "leave your post and come to us!". He is answered by the sound of gunfire. Touma's raw commentary and eye for photographic detail give an unprecedented glimpse into the beginnings of a war that rages to this day. Protecting this 3000-year-old language has united Malulas residents: Christians and Muslims are like brothers in this town, says local resident Ibrahim Kamar. Whilst Mel Gibsons The Passion of Christ has revived interest in the language, fears that Aramaic is dying out continue. Malula, where the orphans must recite in Aramaic, is one of the last bastions for a language Mother Superior Savaf describes as a gift from God. Produced by ABC Australia. In Singapore SkyGreen offers one example of how this might be possible, "not just technically, but economically". By increasing their food security while reducing the impact of food production on global climate change, SkyGreen is 10 times more productive per square foot than conventional farming. How a Brazilian City Has Revolutionized Urban Planning

His idea - to put people before cars - has vastly improved residents' quality of life. Lerner has revolutionised transport in his hometown of Curibita, diverting traffic around the centre. Huge pedestrian areas and parks have replaced busy roads and congestion has been tackled with an efficient bus service. But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice. "You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success? Orcas Co-Exist With Norway's Arctic Fishermen

Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures In Northern Norway herring abounds, attracting orcas in their hundreds. Having learnt that escaped herring from the fishermen's nets are easy prey, the whales can hear the fishing boats pumping their catch from as far as 18km away. "Sometimes it's kind of like we help each other", says professional fisherman Borre Hansen, as orcas circle around his boat. Ensuring that no orcas are captured in his nets "is the biggest challenge" he faces. Filming these animals for the first time at night, Jacques is able to capture their secretive underwater world, noticing their playful and inquisitive behaviour. Japan's Dark History Of Persecuting The Disabled

Japan's Disability Shame: After the Second World War, the Japanese government actively sought to cull its disabled population through a program of forced sterilisation. Disabilities have remained greatly stigmatised ever since. In 2016, Chikiko Ono's son Kazuya was one of many injured in Japan's biggest mass killing since WW2, when a former employee of a disabled care home ran through the building murdering 19 residents and injuring a further 27. The event testifies to the severe stigma surrounding disability in Japan today, which for Kazuya's father only increases his fear of "society's look of disdain and criticism". In 2020, however, Tokyo will be the world's first city to host the Paralympic Games for a second time, an event the Japanese government hopes will raise awareness for its 7 million citizens living with disability. Nepal Cracks Down On NGO Workers Exploiting Children

Nepal's Children At Risk: The vulnerability of Nepal's poorest children draws humanitarian workers from around the world. But some foreigners exploit the trust of young children, sexually abusing those they claim to protect. Wealthy foreigners like the Canadian Peter Daglish win the trust of entire families. After police surveillance, Daglish was charged with paedophilia, although he denies the allegations. "Since April this year, Nepalese police have charged four other foreigners with similar offences", says filmmaker Steve Chao. Dutch psychologist Piet Hein Van Terwisga is one such man and has been jailed for his crimes. "There's no screening going on whatsoever", Handrahan explains. As communities back home struggle to cope with the exodus, where does the future for Moldova lie? Since 2014, Moldovans have moved freely within the EU, prompting a sharp rise in economic migration. Raya is one of the 40,000 Moldovans supporting her family from France. "I’ve found cleaning work...that’s how I earn my daily bread", she says. The money earned by those like Raya now accounts for 25% of Moldova's GDP - "without money from abroad", says Raya's mother, "we wouldn’t be able to survive". Yet communities have been left desolate by the exodus, and child trafficking is rife amongst youngsters with absent parents. Dan, whose parents left him in a children's home to work abroad, is grateful: "It was more difficult before; we didn’t have any money at all. Now, since they went away, life seems easier". Yet with the future of migration in the EU unclear, will the sacrifice have been worthwhile? Battlefield ER: The brutal life of a warzone medic

The Golden Hour - US medics face a perpetual job of trying to keep casualties alive in the first vital hour after being wounded by the Taliban. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures In the heart of Taliban territory, a talented and youthful team of medics race against the clock to save a constant stream of casualties, bracing themselves for the bloody consequences of the imminent 'surge'. Welcome to M*A*S*H 2010, where a brave medical team are on 24 hour alert. "We're the busiest Forward Surgical Team in Iraq and Afghanistan". In the next moment, the alarm sounds and the medivac helicopter is taking off. "Is it a US...an Afghan...a child?", asks the pilot, as a giant smoke cloud from an exploded mine-resistant vehicle comes into view. Two American soldiers have been killed and three wounded by an IED. All are loaded onto the helicopters and the golden hour in which they can be saved, begins..."We provide 21st century intensive care", shouts Major Bryan over the blood-curdling screams of the injured. Yet behind the brave faces, doubts and fears creep in. Arm wrestling and watching DVD's, don't relieve the combat stress of soldiers who have served in Iraq before this. "It's not clear to me that we have an overall endpoint that makes sense", says Major Hueman. In just 10 months this small tented hospital has received a staggering 600 trauma cases. It's about to get a lot busier. An Extremely Rare Interview with Joseph Kony (2006)

It'’s taken nearly a year of negotiations for Kony to agree to this interview. In his jungle hideout in the DRC, he seems relaxed and at ease. He weighs up each question with consideration and is surprisingly articulate. “"The LRA has never been involved in any abductions, rapes or mutilations. That’'s just Museveni’'s propaganda.”" Perhaps mindful of his reputation, Kony denies suggestions God told him to fight. He does, however, admit to being guided by “very many spirits.” And Vincent Otti, his number two states: “"We are fighting to defend the 10 Commandments."” It'’s believed Kony is about to begin peace talks with the Ugandan government. He'’s been following the case of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor with interest. But Kony himself has no fear of an international tribunal. As the VP of South Sudan states: “"If we can bring about a peaceful settlement, the legal process can be done later.”" Mareike Schomerus, Sam Farmar – Ref. 3120 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. Yet good Samaritan Dr Suryani is dedicated to putting a stop to this torture. Most women her age are taking it easy, but not psychiatrist Dr Suryani. I help people who are not being helped. I want to remind the families, society and the government that these people are not useless. Her work is an example of how the right treatment can get excellent results. But her initial government funded budget has now been slashed by 90% threatening the existence of the medical program: treating in a hospital requires much more funding than the funding (required for) giving the responsibility to the community and to the doctors in the local clinics. This lack of resources and financial support is putting Suryani and her volunteers under pressure. What future do Balis mentally ill have now? New software is helping patients around the world to relieve mental health conditions like PTSD and Alzheimer's. But ten years after on, the worst is yet to come. Since the 2007 sub-prime crisis, an exodus of families ruined by the banks has drained Cleveland's life-blood. Communities declined and family homes are now scarred by the evidence of violent crime. Like many Cleveland residents, politician Jim Rokakis felt helpless against the power of global markets: “A lot of us raised our voices and we screamed and we waved and we said there’s a train wreck coming. Well the train wreck came”. The city has changed beyond recognition. As Police Chief Brandon Kutz says, "We’ve had a lot of homicides this year, we’ve had a lot of people shot. We’ve had a lot of citizens afraid and scared. It’s a serious issue”. Those who remain have few choices. Homes are worthless, and long-gone owners are stalked for maintenance costs they can't afford. Resident Stephanie Benifield says, "People are dying and people are just abandoning the homes", because "they can’t afford the homes and the upkeep." For Rokakis, the fight against the banks has been lost. "This was a war", he said. "We lost the war and what we’re doing now... this clean-up is basically burying the dead”. Before his escape three years ago, he didn't even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines

Gold Dust: Under Blaise Compaore's leadership, Burkina Faso's unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on mining conditions. This report digs deep into the industry, exposing the corruption beneath Compaore's ruling. Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. There are nearly 16,000 Indian migrants employed on Italian farms, mainly in the country's North. Many, like Jaspinder's father, arrived in search of employment familiar to their roots. "My dad is from an agriculture tradition, so when he came here he didn't find that big difference between Punjab and Italy." As the Sikhs attempt to keep their culture and traditions strong in their new home, they are also helping to preserve a piece of Italy's culture - the art of making parmesan cheese. Desperate men and children scour underwater mine-shafts in this terrifying report. Breathing through nothing more than a thin pipe connected to an air compressor, going 30 foot deep underwater for hours in search of gold is all in a day’s work for 16-year-old Gerald. "I'm afraid, if the earth collapses, I will get buried underneath" says the teenager. Surrounded by rock walls in the pitch black darkness of the water, the men chip away at walls for 3 hours. They find no gold. For many like Gerald school is a distant memory, and illegally diving for gold the only alternative to starvation. Hundreds of deaths by electrocution, drowning and even the possibility of Mercury poisoning have had little impact on compressor mining activities, which continue un-policed and unregulated. There appears little hope of change on the horizon. "If I could only give job opportunities - I will take them away from compressor mining. It is just that I have no alternative at this point" says Ricarte Padilla, Mayor of Jose Panganiban - Philippines' so-called "Gold Coast". As it is, the children and family men unearthing 60-80kg of gold per month see the lions share of wealth disappear into the Chinese black market. For downloads and more information visit http://www.journeyman.tv/18504/short-films/lost-at-sea.html It's an incredible story of survival on the high seas. Three young men survived 46 days in a tiny boat at the mercy of sharks and raging seas. To survive, they caught birds and sharks with their bare hands. Ben Tooki and his two friends became lost at sea after a storm blew them off course. With no water or food on board, they were forced to improvise. "Sometimes there wouldn't be enough rain, so we licked the boat," states Ben. They also drank shark's blood and rigged up a tarpaulin to catch rainwater. In their seventh week, a freak wave left them close to death. But then, just as they all faced certain death, a miracle rescue...
